What is the Battleship game?
Battleship is a strategy board game for two players. The theme is naval warfare. Each player controls a hidden fleet of warships placed on a grid. The objective is to locate and sink all enemy ships before your opponent sinks yours.
At the start of the game, both players secretly place their ships on their own grid. The opponent cannot see this placement. Because the positions are hidden, the game depends on deduction, memory, and probability rather than direct observation.
During the game, players attempt to discover the location of the opponent’s ships by calling grid coordinates. Each guess represents a fired shot. Over time, players gather information from hits and misses, which helps them narrow down the possible positions of the remaining ships.
Game Rules
The game board is a grid made of 10 rows and 10 columns. Columns are labeled with letters from A to J. Rows are labeled with numbers from 1 to 10. A square on the board is identified by combining a letter and a number, such as B5 or H9.
Each player places the same fleet of ships on their grid before the game begins. Ships must be placed in a straight line either horizontally or vertically. Ships cannot overlap or extend outside the grid.
Each player has the following fleet:
- Aircraft Carrier (6 squares)
- Battleship (5 squares)
- Cruiser (4 squares)
- Submarine (3 squares)
- Destroyer (2 squares)
Basic Gameplay
Players take turns firing shots at the opponent’s grid. A shot is declared by calling a coordinate, such as E7. The opponent checks their board and announces whether the shot is a hit or a miss.
If the coordinate matches a square occupied by a ship, it counts as a hit. The square is marked with an X on the tracking board. If the coordinate does not contain a ship, it is a miss, and the square is marked with O.
When every square of a ship has been hit, that ship is sunk. The opponent announces which ship was destroyed. The game continues until one player sinks the entire enemy fleet. The player who sinks all five opposing ships wins the game.
